Teachings of Dr. Narendra Kumar Ji, youngest son of Guru Maharaj Dr. Chaturbhuj Sahay Ji
In the sacred journey of spiritual evolution, every seeker progresses through five distinct realms—each representing a higher vibration of consciousness and deeper inner growth. This model was developed thousands of years ago, and documented in the Upanishads—a 5-step progression toward self-realization. In this article Dr. Narendra Kumar Ji, offers practical wisdom for overcoming the most common challenges along the way.
Let us explore the five realms of inner growth—and how we can navigate them with awareness, dedication, and grace.
🪐 Stage 1: The Realm of the World – Annamaya Kosh
This is the realm of the body, where worldly concerns dominate. Life revolves around survival, material gain, status, and the five senses. Here, the seeker has not yet set the spiritual goal.
🌱 Progress begins the moment one consciously sets the intention for enlightenment. That shift alone marks the first graduation.
💨 Stage 2: The Realm of Life – Pranamaya Kosh
At this stage, the seeker engages in physical and sensory practices—chanting, prayer, visiting sacred places, reading holy texts—to bring discipline to the body and sensations.
🧘 The mind plays a supportive role here, but physical activity helps regulate the body through intention. This is the realm of devotional enthusiasm and repeated activity based discipline (for example breath work, mantra or kirtan).
🧠 Stage 3: The Realm of Mind – Manomaya Kosh
Now begins the real inner work. The monkey mind must be tamed. The seeker uses meditation to calm thoughts and stabilize emotions.
✨ This is the realm where Upasana (meditating on divine light) and Bhakti (devotion to a divine form) are practiced.
Many modern seekers begin here through mindful meditation, bypassing earlier stages by learning to quiet the mind directly.
Here, seekers often get their first glimpses of inner stillness and peace—but it’s also the realm where most people struggle to remain consistent.
📘 Stage 4: The Realm of Knowledge – Vigyanmaya Kosh
When the mind becomes still, pure insight begins to flow. At this stage, the seeker no longer strives—knowledge arrives unbidden, as grace.
🌟 The intellect becomes a refined channel for truth, realization, and understanding of the Supreme Being.
No longer bound by dogma or belief systems, the seeker now perceives the unity of all things.
💖 Stage 5: The Realm of Love – Anandamaya Kosh
This is the summit of spiritual growth—a state of pure, unconditional love and surrender. The seeker dissolves the ego and merges with the Divine.
🙏 Enlightenment is not just knowledge—it is being love.
It is the realization that everything is the Divine, and nothing is separate.
Here, peace is not just felt—it becomes the natural state of one’s presence.
⚠️ Common Obstacles on the Path (and How to Overcome Them)
Even sincere seekers face challenges as they rise through the five realms. Dr. Narendra Kumar Ji identified three common and critical obstacles—and their powerful remedies.
1. 🧍 Holding On While Trying to Let Go
Many seekers wish to attain enlightenment without giving up their attachments—material, emotional, or egoic. But both cannot coexist.
🕊️ The Remedy:
Intensity of intention to give up is key.
Recall the story of the sage who held his disciple underwater. The disciple had come to the sage several times to show how he can attain self-realization. One day the sage took him to the river and went for a swim together. Suddenly the sage held the disciple underwater. Only when the disciple gasped for air with total desperation did the sage release him. That same intensity—the burning need for spiritual breath—is what’s required to transcend the lower realms.
Unless the desire for truth becomes stronger than all worldly distractions, progress will remain slow.
2. 🌌 Lack of Faith in the Higher Power
Even with meditation practice, if the belief in the presence of Guru or Higher Consciousness is weak, the seeker remains restless.
🕊️ The Remedy:
Cultivate faith before meditation—not just during.
Whether you see the Divine as a form (Jesus, Krishna, Guru) or as light or presence—let your prayer, music, invocation, or heartful surrender activate that connection.
The stronger the faith, the deeper the meditation.
This faith is the key to crossing the Realm of Mind, which is the widest and most unstable of the five.
3. 👁️ Mistaking Yourself as the Doer
Often, seekers begin by observing the light, but over time they try to control the meditation—struggling with thoughts, pushing them away, trying to "succeed."
🕊️ The Remedy:
Become an Observer, not the controller.
Trust that thoughts may arise because the higher energy is cleaning your mind. Let the Guru, let the Divine Presence, do the work.
You are the vessel. The doer is the light within.
Surrender is not passive. It is the active art of allowing.
🔄 The Journey Within: Crossing the Five Realms of Consciousness
This five-stage model is not only universal—it is elegantly practical. Whether you're just starting your meditation journey or have been practicing for years, understanding where you are, could help guide your next step, with humility and clarity.
And by learning how to overcome the internal obstacles with sincere desire, unwavering faith, and non-doership (becoming an observer)—you progress not just through stages, but into deeper states of being.
